Stretching the musical palette; Paramount ready to help Austin jam to variety of world music
Published 9:11 am Thursday, July 9, 2015
Even with the deluge of musical genres in recent past, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. We all have our jams, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. (Just give the “Free Bird” requests a break once in a while, hon.) But we should still stretch our legs every now and then, musically speaking. And summer is the perfect time for adventure. With that in mind, the Paramount Theatre is once again playing host to the free World Music concert series.
Kicking things off on July 15 is Kinobe & the Wamu Spirit, with tunes from Kinobe’s native Uganda. With rich, mellow percussion, the group’s music is at turns celebratory and relaxed, leading the audience into an infectious and somehow familiar groove with each unique piece. The music transcends expectations of both “African music” and its western cousins (listen closely for the occasional electric guitar lick).
House of Waters continues the series on July 29. This jazz fusion trio defies the limits of genre, instead embracing risk and depth of sound. Each musician is a virtuoso in his own right, and perhaps it is this experience, or the band’s instrumentation, or maybe their combined, infectious love of music and its power, but something about House of Waters draws the listener in and won’t let go.
Makem & Spain, a traditional Irish folk band, provides the series finale on Aug. 19 — just three days before we kick off the Austin ArtWorks Festival. Three musicians bring the history of two Irish families — families steeped in musical tradition — to each song. Their tunes contain the timeless qualities of folk classics, songs of the worker, songs of the sea and Irish culture. They tell the tale of Ireland and its people – a culture that has undergone terrible strife, but remains strong. Makem & Spain prove that sometimes you can find the best adventure just by looking back.
All three World Music concerts take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Which is a strange coincidence, as I’ve always thought Wednesdays to be the perfect night for stretching legs.
