A 17-year-old Austin teen was arrested early Monday for allegedly breaking into cars near Woodson Kindergarten Center.
Witnesses reported suspicious people prowling the neighborhood near Seventh Street and 15th Avenue Southeast at about 5:45 a.m., according to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger. Officers found the suspect, who witnesses said wore a green shirt and black pants, nearby riding his bicycle.
Police found more than $100 in cash, along with lots of coins, on the teen. Krueger said the suspect was taken to the Mower County jail pending charges.
The teen’s arrest is the latest in a spree of car break-ins over the past few months.
It appears he wasn’t the only one prowling Austin early Monday, as a woman at the 800 block of 10th Avenue Northwest reported her purse was stolen from her car while she was unloading groceries from Walmart at about 1 a.m.
The victim found her glove box open and her purse missing while she was in between trips to put her groceries away. More than $100 in cash, along with several credit cards and other items were reported missing, according to Krueger.
“Whether residents are parking on the street or in their driveway, they need to lock or secure their vehicles,” Krueger said.
Last week, police arrested a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old in connection with other car and garage break-ins in northwest Austin. The two allegedly tried to break into a garage.
