City approves MnDOT’s planned Hwy. 105 work

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will move forward with a construction project for the mill and overlay of Highway 105 through southwest Austin, also known as 12th Street Southwest, after the Austin City Council approved the proposal Monday evening during a council work session.
The council approved to install a signal system for local roadways, mill and overlay of parking lanes, adjustment of utility manholes and the installation of a new pedestrian crossing sign on Oakland Avenue at 16th Avenue and bike symbols on 12th Street Southwest from Oakland Avenue to 16th Avenue.
The estimated cost for the city portion is $300,000.
In other news, the council:
—approved a bid from Schwab LLC to build a new shop/storage facility at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center. This building will replace the current shop, which will be torn down in order to make a new entrance to the nature center.
—approved a bid for Rochester Sand & Gravel to construct the South Main Trail, a 10-foot wide pedestrian trail, along South Main Street from Ninth Place to 16th Avenue.
