The summer may soon be over, but area road construction won’t finish for some time.

City and county public works projects are in full swing, with work progressing throughout Mower County on street reconstruction jobs.

In Austin, street reconstruction near Southgate Elementary School at 16th Street and 19th Avenue Southwest is nearing completion, according to Austin Public Works Director Steven Lang. Workers will pave the area Thursday and start other restoration to open the streets in time for the beginning of school.

Workers started concrete paving at Eighth Street and Eighth Avenue Northeast last week and will continue with additional roadway paving this week.

The South Crane project, just east of the Hormel Foods Corp. plant, will soon start storm sewer and sanitary work as the project began a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, workers have finished the sanitary and water work to reopen Third Avenue Northeast. between Main and First Street, and Lang expects concrete paving to start next month.

Finally, the Turtle Creek I sanitary sewer project in northwest Austin began a few weeks ago and is well underway, according to Lang.

“That project is proceeding according to schedule,” he said.

The city has started clearing trees for a sanitary sewer project in southeast Austin by Car Nu. In addition, workers could begin a trail system from Bandshell Community Park to 16th Avenue Southwest, which is scheduled to be completed next June.

On the county side, workers have repaired two bridges in the northeast part of Mower County and are finishing a $1.5 million paving project on County Road 16, County Road 1 and County Road 6. Public Works Director Mike Hanson also said the county is working on a $1.2 million paving project on County Road 8 north of Grand Meadow.

The county will also start on bike trail paving and a bike trail bridge in Rose Creek next month.

“Overall, we’re moving pretty well on schedule,” Hanson said.

On the state side, a two-mile portion of Highway 105 is closed for the Minnesota Department of Transportation to pave over previously replaced culverts. The work is expected to be done by Sept. 4.

The paving work begins on Mower County Road 28 and ends at Mower County Road 4. The road is closed from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the work. Motorists can use Highway 218 south to Mower County Road 4 west, where it connects with Highway 105. The northbound detour is the route in reverse.
