Best Bets: Getting autumn started with a bang

Get ready for a weekend of fun with golf, the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center and creamed chicken dinner. With fundraisers and a fall bazaar, this weekend is sure to get everyone hopping as autumn swings into season.
1. Sumner Elementary School Playground Fundraiser
4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Pizza Ranch — Austin
Sumner Youth Leadership Team, with the assistance of Sumner staff, will host a Sumner Playground Fundraiser. The Sumner Student Council and School Safety Patrol is raising funds to purchase a new, safe piece of climbing equipment for the school yard playground. Sumner students strive to be active every day at recess and the community will benefit by using the climber to become and stay fit and active. The cost is $8 to $10.
2. Flight Night
6:15-9 p.m. on Friday, YMCA of Austin
Enjoy the gymnastics gym, fun games and a light meal with friends during Flight Night. Flight Nights are supervised and parents can drop their children off. The event is for ages 6 and older. Pre-registration is highly encouraged as space is limited. Visit the YMCA website for more details.
3. ArtRocks Open Jam Session
7-9:30 p.m. on Friday, Austin ArtWorks Center
If you’re a musician and looking to get on a stage and perform then head on down to the Austin ArtWorks Center for the first-ever ArtRocks Open Jam Session. The band Spare Parts will play play the part of house band and the stage will be open to anybody with music to play. The public is also welcome to attend this special event.
4. 11th annual Hormel Nature Center 8K Trail Run/One
8-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jay C. Hormel Nature Center
Enjoy a scenic fall run with friends and family on the nature center trails. All ages and abilities are invited to join this race benefitting the nature center and organized by Overby Orthodontics. Refreshments will be available to all runners before and after the race, with a water station midway through the course. Entrants will receive a Jay C. Hormel Nature Center 8K t-shirt at a first come, first serve basis. Register with Dr. Eric Overby at 507-437-3269 or 701 1st Ave SW. Race day registration is at 8 a.m. and the race is at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is $18 for the 8K, $5 for the One-Mile Kids Run for kids under 12; race-day registration is $25 for 8K, $7 for Kids Run. 5. Style Sports First annual Disc Golf Whoop-Tee Jam
9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Driesner Park
The Style Sports first annual Disc Golf Whoop-Tee Jam tournament is $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event. All ages are invited, and children under 18 need a parent’s permission. 6. Fall Harvest Celebration
11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Mower County Historical Society
This annual celebration will feature arts and crafts, wagon rides, demonstrations, pioneer activities for the whole family, a Thresher’s dinner, a bake sale, live music, gunny sack races and candy blast, and much more. Outdoor exhibits are open, including a railroad car, log cabin and blacksmith’s shop. The event is free and open to all ages. Call 507-437-6082 for more information.
7. Annual Creamed Chicken Dinner
4:30-7 p.m. on Saturday, Brownsdale United Methodist Church
Brownsdale United Methodist Church will host a Creamed Chicken Dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes creamed chicken over biscuit, a hot vegetable, a salad bar of homemade salads, and fresh baked pie or dessert. The cost is $9 for adults and $4 for children ages 5-12.
8. The D.C. Drifters
7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Austin VFW
The D.C. Drifters full ballroom band will put on a free show at the Austin Veterans of Foreign Wars Club at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Donations will be taken to support Austin Youth Sports.
9. Oktoberfest
11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday, Veteran’s Pavilion in Band Shell Park
This festival will feature brats, beer, and a bazaar with proceeds going to the Lyle Area Cancer Fund. Participate in a hot-dog eating contest, make a pot of chili for the chili cook-off competition, dunk a favorite local celebrity in the dunk tank or just enjoy the food, bake sale, polka band, henna tattoos, and more.
