Best Bets: An icy start to fall

Get ready for the chill of fall and a taste of winter weather when you hit the ice this weekend at Riverside Arena for open skate. With rummage sales, a cattle show, festivals and more, this weekend will bring fun for everyone.
1. Public Skate
4:30-7 p.m. Riverside Arena,
The chill in the air indicates the changing of seasons, and it’s time for public skating to start up again. The cost is $4 to skate and $1 to rent skates. For more information, call 507-433-1881.
2. Westminster Presbyterian Church Rummage Sale
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Westminster Presbyterian Church 802 4th Street SW
The rummage sale will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include soup, sloppy joes and carmel apple crisp. On Saturday, the bag sale will take place from 8-10 a.m. The sale features clothing, miscellaneous items, baked goods, fall garden products, collectables and more. There is parking available at the east and west entrances.
3. 2015 Regional Highland Cattle Show
All day on Saturday, Mower County Fairgrounds
This annual cattle show features a unique breed of cattle known for rugged characteristics, longevity, and beef that is lean, well-marbled and flavorful. And they are beautiful! For more information, call 507-433-1868.
4. Family Fun Festival
8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Izaak Walton Cabin, Todd Park
A pancake breakfast will be held from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. There will also be a 5K run/walk and 10K run/bike at 9 a.m., and kid’s carnival games from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The event is hosted by Pacelli Catholic Schools.
5. Mower County Habitat and Pheasants Forever – Hunt for a Cure
9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Three Arrows Game Preserve, LeRoy
This event features hunting, raffles and prizes, with all proceeds going to the Hormel Institute for cancer research. The entry fee is $125, and participants should fill out a form and email it to james.d.surdy@ampf.com. Tickets may be purchased from committee members or participants can register on site the day of the event. For more information, call Ben at 507-324-5558.
6. Terry Dilley Symposium
10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Austin City Council Room
This free symposium on evolutionary biology will be presented by Dr. Mark Borrello, from the University of Minnesota. For more information, call Rick Herreid at 507-219-6535.
7. All You Can Eat Dad’s Belgian Waffle Breakfast
9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday, The Austin Eagles Club, 107 11th St NE
This fundraiser is an all-you-can-eat Dad’s Belgian Waffle Breakfast that will benefit programs and services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, provided by The Arc Mower County. Tickets are available at The Arc office, 401 Second Ave. NE, Austin; from any Member of The Arc’s board of directors; or at the door. Advance tickets are $8 for adults or $5 for children ages 6-12.
