ROCHESTER — The Austin boys soccer team spent 94 minutes pushing towards their first state berth since 2009, but it all came to an end in a matter of about three seconds in the Section 1A title game in RCTC Thursday.

The Packers and Rochester Lourdes played to a stalemate for much of the night and the Eagles (16-2-2 overall) finally ended it when Donovan Buss headed in a corner kick from Tiernan Talbot with 6:53 left in the second the second overtime to give them a 1-0 win.

This is the second straight season that the Packers (10-6-4 overall) have had their season end to Rochester Lourdes in the section title game and Austin junior forward Mattias Parada was adamant after the game that it won’t happen again next year. He said he’s hoping the Packers get back to the Class ‘A’ state tournament next season and he felt they could’ve won on Thursday.

“I honestly think we had some of the best chances,” Parada said. “They had so many corner kicks, they were bound to make at least one. I know for a fact we were the better team.”

Parada and Austin senior forward Ochan Ochogi worked together to produce a few run-outs in the game, but Ochogi was denied on a couple of early breakaways in the second half.

Parada played soccer in Arizona last season, but he made the adjustment to playing with Ochogi quickly this fall.

“I’ve played with a lot of forwards through all of my playing and I’ve never enjoyed playing with any one as much as Ochan,” Parada said. “We just connected so well and I’m going to really miss playing with him.”

Austin junior keeper Chris Kirchgatter kept the Packers in the game when he made a couple of jumping saves during regulation. He finished with 10 saves and Austin had seven shots on goal in the loss.

Austin head coach Jens Levisen said it was tough for his team to come up short in what was one of their better efforts of the season.

“I don’t think words can describe what they feel like after this. They played so well, but then to fall short. There’s a lot of hurt and I think that’s OK, because it shows that they’re invested in their team and their sport,” Levisen said. “Right up until the end we were in there and we were getting opportunities. There were a couple of times where it looked like it could fall our way and it didn’t quite fall our way.”

The Packers will graduate seven seniors from this year’s team, including standouts Alex Evenson, Ryan Kempen, Ochogi, Sam Ewing and Sean Baker. Levisen thanked his seniors for the leadership they provided and he’s hoping the Packers can come back even stronger next season.

“We’ve been here five of the last seven years and we’ve only won it once,” he said. “We need to see what we need to as individuals and as a team to get things going in the direction once.”
