Mervyn Charles Sauer, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Prairie Manor Care Center, Blooming Prairie.

He was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Sanborn, North Dakota, the son of Wilfred and Louise (Benett) Sauer. At an early age, Mervyn’s family moved to Minnesota, where he attended grade school and Austin High School. His first job was on a dairy farm, and then he was hired by Hormel Foods Corporation, where he worked for over 41 years. Mervyn served his country in the U.S. Army for nearly three years. He was first scout for the First Armored Sixth Infantry Division, spending time in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. In September 1942, Mervyn married Dawnene Rogers. The couple raised three children, Tim, Gloria and Julie. Dawnene passed away June 12, 1976. In 1977, he married Doris (Haney) Phillip. Doris passed away April 3, 1998. Mervyn was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin, where he served as an usher at the Saturday service for many years. He enjoyed traveling, fishing at his cabin in Roberts Lake, woodworking, and taking casino trips.

Mervyn is survived by his daughters: Gloria Jean (John) Norton of Austin, and Julie (Dan) Page of Red Wing; 10 grandchildren: Jim (Jean) Sauer, Chris (Tracy) Sauer, Melany Mendenhal, Brad (Michele) Norton, Connie (Greg) Pettit, Shannon Norton, Ryan (Jamie) Norton, Natalie (Dan) Wandel, Renee Dickenson, Danyelle (Chris) Kaiser; 20 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marge Gregg, and Luella Howe, two brothers: Warren (Marilyn) Sauer, and Charles (Betty) Sauer, all of Vancouver; many nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred and Louise Sauer; his first wife Dawnene Sauer; his second wife Doris Sauer; his son Tim Sauer; and two sisters: Eileen Kittelson and Patricia Newton.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Pastor Christy Shelinbarger officiating. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
