SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A lingering snowstorm over the northern Plains is setting records, just not in Mower County and southeast Minnesota.
The National Weather Service says 8.7 inches of snow fell in Sioux Falls Monday, breaking the city’s record for the date of 7.6 inches in 1954.
Mitchell set a record with 7.2 inches, along with Sioux City, Iowa, with 6.6 inches.
Aberdeen didn’t set a snow record, but the American News reports that conditions Monday afternoon were so poor that an incoming flight was unable to land and instead returned to Minneapolis.
Austin got about an inch of snow early Monday morning, but much of the precipitation came as rain and sleet the rest of the day with a dusting of snow.
As of this morning, winter weather warnings and advisories remained in place for much of the Dakotas, with several more inches of snow expected by Tuesday evening.
The winter weather advisory for Mower County had been canceled.
As of Tuesday, the weather service wasn’t watching any significant storms for the Austin area this week.
In fact, highs should reach the upper 30s and low 40s by this weekend.
