Update: Victim identified, suspect arrested in fatal Albert Lea hit-and-run

The Albert Lea Police Department received information this morning that a vehicle and an adult male matching the description of those involved in a fatal hit-and-run were at Motor Inn in Albert Lea, according to the department’s Facebook page. Officers arrived and located both. The vehicle was towed as evidence and the male suspect was brought to Freeborn County Law Enforcement Center for questioning. Later, Leslie David Jones, 51, of Hartland was placed under arrest for criminal vehicular homicide.

Jones is a suspect in a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday night, where a pedestrian died after what authorities are calling a hit-and-run crash on East Main Street in Albert Lea in front of McDonald’s.

The victim has been identified as Joanne Carol Kleine, 66, of Albert Lea.

The Albert Lea Police Department asked anyone with information tied to the incident to contact police at 507-377-5200, according to a news release Wednesday.

Police received a report of the crash, at the intersection of East Main Street and Katherine Street, at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers found Kleine deceased at the scene. The crash appeared to have occurred in the westbound lanes.

The suspect vehicle was described as a blue Ford pickup  likely have damage to the front driver’s side,  specifically to the orange marker light. The Police Department’s Facebook page this morning said the truck had been located and they were speaking to a person of interest.

Officers on scene were awaiting a crash reconstructionist from the Minnesota State Patrol Thursday morning.

Kleine was reportedly heading south across East Main Street, in front of McDonald’s, when she was struck by a vehicle heading west according to Lt. Darren Hanson.
