The Austin girls basketball team rebounded from a nightmare start, but it wasn’t enough as the Packers lost 51-48 at Rochester John Marshall Friday.
Austin senior Ashley Hawkshead missed a three-pointer that would’ve tied the game as time expired. The Rockets (4-1 overall, 3-0 Big Nine) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest and the closest the Packers (2-2 overall, 2-2 Big Nine) got was within one point.
“After a really tough start to the game, we played really good basketball for the last 31 minutes,” Austin head coach Todd Johnson said. “Hopefully the kids believe that we can play with anybody.”
Just three players scored for the Packers as Ruth Koang led the way with 24 points.
Austin scoring: Ruth Koang, 24; Shayley Vesel, 15; Ashley Hawkshead, 9; free throws: 83 percent (15-for-18)
