The Riverland Community College men’s basketball team was already shorthanded going into its game against Ridgewater, and it didn’t help matters when the Warriors came out on a shooting tear.
Ridgewater (12-4 overall, 3-1 MCAC) knocked down 19 out three-pointers on 51 percent shooting behind the arc to beat the Blue Devils 86-73 in Riverland Gym Wednesday.
Ridgewater’s Jack Turnbull hit eight three-pointers in the first half to give his team a 52-38 advantage at the break and the Blue Devils (5-11 overall, 2-4 MCAC) weren’t able to get closer than seven in the second half.
“We talked before the game to let guys know who the shooters are,” Riverland head coach Derek Hahn said. “Guys have got to listen better and they’ve got to execute the game plan better. This is a tough league and when you’re playing one of the top teams, you’ve got to do everything right to win.”
The Blue Devils were led by Jerome Cummings, who had 16 points, and Greg Boyd, who had 15 points.
RCC has had to re-group a little after having some of its key players out of the lineup recently.
“It’s frustrating when you have a lot of guys who played a lot of minutes in the first semester who aren’t with you,” Hahn said. “I think a lot the guys that got limited action in the first half are stepping up and they’re playing a lot of minutes.”
