Boys hockey: Spartans down Packers

The Austin boys hockey team had trouble containing Rochester Mayo as it lost 6-3 in Riverside Arena Thursday.
The Spartans (11-8 overall, 7-4 Gopher) scored two goals in the first five minutes of the contest to go up 2-0 and they scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second period to go up 4-1.
“We’re not playing for 51 minutes,” Austin head coach Erik LaRock said. “We played right with them for half of the game, but the other half I thought we were penalty killing. We really struggled tonight moving the puck in the defensive zone. We gave up too many shots in the second period.”
Noah Bawek had 29 saves for the Packers (5-8-1 overall, 3-7 Big Nine) and Isaac Arnold, Kory Potach and Brayden Merritt all scored one goal.
“We need to fix a couple of things and get better,” LaRock said. “Our next two games are against the top two teams in the Big Nine and it’ll be good for us. We’ve got a long ways to go until the playoffs.”
