A Dexter business and its partners are looking to help out another community family this year, but they’re also aiming to help more throughout the year.

T ‘N G Plumbing is accepting nominations through Jan. 25 for its third Pay It Forward, a program to remodel a bathroom for a family in need. But T ‘N G co-owner Gina Grundmeier is also working to make Pay It Forward a nonprofit, which would allow T ‘N G and its many partners to help out families in smaller ways throughout the year.

“There’s so many people that deserve it and need the help,” Grundmeier said.

T ‘N G’s started Pay It Forward by rebuilding the bathroom of Jason and Shannon Ferch in 2014, a project that came in well over $5,000 in donated parts and labor.

T ‘N G and area contractors redesigned Jason and Shannon’s bathroom to allow Jason, who is handicapped to have more space to use the facilities.

In 2015, Gary and Marsha Wilde received the remodel gift after their family had endured several tragedies over the years.

Now, Grundmeier has submitted paperwork to make Pay It Forward a nonprofit with the hopes of being able to help out families in need through smaller projects like a furnace replacement as they come up. She hopes to complete that process soon.

As for the 2016 remodel, T ‘N G is looking for people to submit an essay nominating a local person or family who deserves a new bathroom — whether it be a U.S. military serviceman or servicewoman, an elderly couple in need of handrails, or someone who needs the help.

Several people who aren’t part of T ‘N G Plumbing will look over the essays and give Grundmeier and her husband, Todd, a list of 10 finalists. T ‘N G will then inspect the bathrooms in question and hopefully announce a winner by mid-February.

Though Grundmeier is still calling other contractors and businesses to see which want to help in 2016, she said there’s been growing interest in project.

“It’s expanded. We definitely have more of a crew,” Grundmeier said. “More volunteers called after the last one or want to do something in some way.”

In past years, businesses like Danny Muzik’s Muddin’, Austin Electric, Doors and Floors, Flaherty Painting, Wagner Construction, Becker Construction, Jason Culbert Ceramics and more helped out on the project, while the Holiday Inn gives the family lodging during the remodel and several restaurants donate meals.

“It’s an awesome thing to be involved in,” Grundmeier said.

Along with photos, Grundmeier told people interested in nominating someone that essay length doesn’t matter, but it should include photos of the bathroom and the family’s story to highlight why they are in need and deserving of receiving the remodel.

“This is not an ugly bathroom contest,” she said. “It’s just about bringing some light and hope back to someone.”

Entries can be emailed to payitforward@tngplumbing.com or sent to T ‘N G Plumbing at 64456 230th St. in Dexter. Mailed entries must be postmarked by Jan. 25. Incomplete entries, such as nominations without photos of the bathroom or no contact information, will not be considered.

The family needs to own and live in their home, and rental properties are not considered. More details and submission guidelines are available at www.facebook.com/T-N-G-Plumbing-194058213947013/ and www.tngplumbing.com.
