A 16-year-old male was arrested Thursday after rummaging through vehicles.
Officers responded to the east side of Queen of Angles, 1001 Oakland Ave. E., at about 11:40 a.m. Thursday to a report of a male prowling around and through vehicles, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.
Two witnesses told officers the male entered a maroon van. The owner was located and found the van and glove box had been ransacked.
The suspect was wearing an orange hoodie/jacket, gray flannel pants and had short hair. The Austin Fire Department, who was in the area at the time on unrelated matters, saw the suspect run into a residence.
Officers found the home, spoke with a parent who told them their son just returned home, and the suspect was taken into custody, according to the report.
Officers found the suspect already had an active probation apprehension order out on him. The suspect received a citation for tampering with a motor vehicle. He was transported to Many Rivers Detention Center in Rochester.
Several burglaries have been reported in Austin since the summer, and law enforcement has repeatedly urged residents to secure their belongings in vehicles and residences.
“Citizens of Austin need to lock their car doors,” Krueger said.
