Super Bowl Sunday isn’t just about football. For many, it’s also about spaghetti.
On Sunday, the Unity Chapter No. 29, Order of the Eastern Star, will serve a spaghetti dinner for the 15th straight year from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This project helps fund the group’s charitable giving in Austin: four $1,500 scholarships from Minnesota Masonic Charities for graduating high school seniors and scholarships for the Hormel Historic Home summer program for children with autism, The Mower County Humane Society, school music programs and more.
“Over the years we’ve donated to a lot, but recently we’ve been centering on the camp for children with autism at the Hormel Historic Home,” Acting Worthy Matron Mary Hanson said.
Last year, the group was also able to donate to I.J. Holton Intermediate School for student instruments.
“After the spaghetti dinner, our trustees will be meeting to discuss where our donations will go this year,” Hanson said.
The requested donation is $10 per meal, and the dinner will take place at the Masonic Lodge, 303A North Main St.
Hanson said there are usually around 70 or 80 people at the dinner, if not more, and some just give donations. Many people buy tickets each year from both inside and outside the community, from places such as Roseville, Hastings, Rochester, St. Charles and more.
Hanson explained there are two fundraisers open to the community each year, including this dinner and another event on Election Day.
“It’s important because that’s where we raise the money that can help us to donate to the community,” she said.
Hanson thanked everyone who volunteers time to make the dinner a success.
“Our people that belong, they’re terrific, they really step up to the plate,” she said.
