Best Bets: An artsy weekend

Get ready to skate away your troubles this weekend, and top it off with some great piano music. With the Harris Piano Competition, some Bob Ross painting, good food and student artwork, there is tons to get you out of the house on these cold winter days.
1. Student artwork showcase opening
5-7 p.m. Friday, ArtWorks Center
Austin Public Schools has teamed up with the Austin ArtWorks Center for Youth Art Month. The first- through eighth-grade Youth Art Show will be on display at the ArtWorks Center from this Friday through Saturday, April 2. The show opening will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature music from Ellis art teacher Jesse Smith and refreshments courtesy of Superfresh.
2. Harris Piano Competition
9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Historic Paramount Theatre
The Harris Piano Contest is for youth ages 6 through 18 on the day of the contest who live in the Minnesota counties of Mower, Dodge, Freeborn, Steele or Waseca, or the Iowa counties of Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Mitchell or Worth. The portion of the competition at the Historic Paramount Theatre is open to the public.
3. Public Skate
2:30-4 p.m. Saturday, Packer Arena
Come skate away your worries before the ice melts for the season. Cost is $4 to skate and $1 to rent skates. For more information, call 507-433-1881.
4. Bob Ross Landscapes with Julie Fjetland
1-4 p.m. Saturday, Austin ArtWorks Center
Discover the joy of painting. The Bob Ross “Wet-on-Wet” technique is for all skill levels, and particularly for those who have never painted before. Learn how to prep canvas, follow step-by-step instruction by certified Ross instructor Julie Fjetland, and take home a finished piece after spending an evening with new friends. The class size is limited, so register early to reserve a spot. The cost is $65 for ages 16 and over. For more information, call 507-434-0934.
5. Spaghetti Dinner
4:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Our Savior Lutheran Brownsdale
Enjoy a great dinner for a free-will donation. The money raised at this event will help fund programs supported by the church, such as Vacation Bible School.
