Donald F. Schminke, 91, formerly of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away Feb. 23, 2016, in Austin, Minnesota.

Everyone who knew him will miss his stories and knowledge of family history. Don was born, June 4, 1924, in Atkins, Iowa, to the late Clarence F. and Margaret Schminke. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage to Doris K. Coleman on Aug. 22, 1950. Don owned and operated Don’s Big Wheel for over 25 years in Council Bluffs. His memberships include charter member of Queen of Apostles Church, American Legion, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and Eagles. He spent countless hours working with the school booster clubs.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Douglas, in 1980.

Survivors include his wife Doris; children and spouses, Dennis (Vicki) all of Austin, Minnesota, Linda (Jon) Chamberlain, of Plymouth, Minnesota, Dr. Marshall (Dr. Maureen Ambrose) of Orlando, Florida, Karen Calixto, of Alta Loma, California, Thomas of  Chicago, Illinois; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Thomason, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Mary (Boyd) Harris, of Rio Verde, Arizona; brothers, Clarence, of Eugene, Oregon, and James, of Rochester, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Council Bluffs. Don will be laid to rest with his son Douglas in St. Joseph Cemetery. Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 2.

The family wishes to thank especially the staff at The Cedars for their attentive care while Don was living there.
