Alumni Update: Gach will play in NJCAA tourney and baseball and softball players begin seasons

BASKETBALL

Austin grad Gach Gach will play in the 24-team Division I NJCAA men’s basketball championship in Hutchinson, Kansas March 14-19.

Gach is a freshman on No. 16 seeded North Dakota State School of Science and his team will open play against No. 17 Harcum March 14.

Gach has played 19.8 minutes per game for the Wildcats and he has averaged 7.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and .8 steals per game.

Austin grad AJ Nywesh recently wrapped up his basketball career at Lake Region State College. Nywesh averaged 21.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting 38 percent on three-pointers and 84 percent on free throws.

Nywesh, who finished with 1,000 career points, is likely to continue his basketball career at a Division I or Division II four-year school next year, but he is uncertain of where he will play at this time.

Austin grads Tom Aase and Zach Wessels wrapped up their sophomore basketball seasons with a 105-100 loss to No. 2 ranked Augustana in the Northern Sun Conference quarterfinals recently.

USF finished with its most wins (17) in the Northern Sun since 2011.

Aase averaged 5.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game on the season and Wessels averaged 2.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and he had 44 assists and 15 steals, while committing just 25 turnovers in 394 minutes.

Austin grad Bret Lukes ended up starting in 10 games in his sophomore season with Hamline University. Lukes averaged 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists. Lukes shot 47 percent from the field, 42 percent on three-pointers and 71 percent on free throws.

Blooming Prairie grad Taylor Hagen is a freshman on the University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team that finished in first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers will open MVC tournament play March 11.

Hagen has played in 21 games for the Panthers and averaged 1.4 points and .7 rebounds per contest.

GYMNASTICS

Austin grad Sela Fadness helped lead Hamline University to a seventh place finish at the WIAC Championships in La Crosse, Wis. March 4.

Fadness, a sophomore at Hamline, scored a 9.575 to take 11th on the floor in the WIAC meet. In the Winona State Invite Feb. 19, Fadness took second place on the vault with a 9.55 and she took second on the floor with a 9.625.

HOCKEY

Austin grad Adam Maxfield is having a strong season with the Gillette Wild. Maxfield, a defenseman, had nine goals and 16 assists in 38 games with the Wild.

BASEBALL

Austin native Steve Serratore is hitting .278 with two homers, three doubles and 11 RBIs for Kansas State University (7-4 overall). Serratore has four hits in his last nine at bats with a double and three RBIs for the Wildcats.

Lyle grad Jordan Hart has played in nine games for Minnesota State University so far this season.

The freshman is hitting .321 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Mavericks (6-4 overall).

Hayfield grad Tyler Nelson is off to great start in his red-shirt senior season at Bemidji State University. Nelson is hitting .400 with two doubles, three triples, two homers and nine RBIs in nine games for the Beavers (2-7 overall).

SOFTBALL

Hayfield grad Dani Wagner has played 14 of 18 games for the University of Minnesota this season. Wagner has an on base percentage of .429 as she has drawn three walks and scored four runs for the Gophers (13-5 overall).

Blooming Prairie grad Tricia DeBoer is hitting .302 with three doubles, one triple and seven RBIs for St. Cloud State University (10-11 overall). DeBoer, a senior outfielder with the Huskies, is three for four on steals.

Austin grad Sydney Murphy had a strong opening performance for UW-La Crosse. Murphy started the first two games for UWL (2-0 overall) and went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Austin grad Abbey Ball is 1-for-1 with a single so far this season for UW-Stout (0-2 overall).

Blooming Prairie grad Shelbi Swenson has drawn four walks in 10 at bats this season for Bethel University (2-2 overall).
