The Austin Police Department was involved in a short foot chase around 11:35 a.m. Monday which ended in the arrest of a man wanted in Crow Wing County, Minnesota.
An officer was on routine patrol when he saw a vehicle with a driver who was recognized to not have a valid driver’s license. The officer also saw the passenger duck down when they spotted police, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.
The car stopped by Apollo Liquor & Superette and both people exited the vehicle. The driver started walking west on West Oakland Avenue.
The officer pulled up to him and asked his name. The man gave a name, then took off his sandals and began running south on Ninth Street Southwest.
The officer chased him through backyards of the 1100 block of First and Second Avenues Southwest. Another police officer arrived, and the first officer was able to hold the man at taser-point. The man then complied with instructions.
The suspect was taken to the Mower County jail, where it was discovered he is 27 years old and from Pierz, Minnesota, which is about 30 miles south of Brainerd.
It was found he has felony warrants in Crow Wing County for fleeing in a motor vehicle. He complained of chest pains, and Gold Cross Ambulance was summoned and they said his vitals were good.
The man admitted to being under the influence of meth and said he had been in hiding for the past six months because of the warrants. Austin police officers also issued a citation for fleeing on foot.
