An Austin man is in custody after he allegedly stole a Salvation Army donation kettle.
Matthew Hanson, 28, was arrested and will likely face charges as he’s accused of stealing a Salvation Army kettle from the front desk of the thrift store at 704 10th St. NE.
Austin Police Officers responded to the theft report at about 3:42 p.m. on Tuesday at the Salvation Army. Security footage shows a man, believed to be Hanson, and a woman come up to the check out counter and steal the kettle when the clerk turns to help another customer. He then takes the kettle and walks out of the store, according to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger.
Police officers recognized the man as Hanson and gained knowledge of his whereabouts.
They eventually found him on the 1000 block of Sixth Avenue Northeast early Thursday at 12:46 a.m.
He admitted to taking the money and “charity can” as he called it and that the theft was spontaneous. He also said he spent the money already.
Hanson is currently in custody and awaiting charges. The woman may also be charged in the theft.
