Velma Darlene Meyer, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 18, 2016, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin, Minnesota — one week before her 84th birthday.
She was born March 25, 1932, at home in Elmore, Minnesota, to Orville and Lila Dobson. Velma graduated from Elmore High School in 1950. After graduation she studied cosmetology in Mankato, and she worked at Ramseth Beauty Salon in Austin, Minnesota. She went to Central Airline School in Kansas City, Kansas, and landed a job in reservations with Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eventually, she dedicated 35 years as an office manager at the YMCA of Austin. After retiring, she worked part time at the Spam Museum and Walmart.
On Aug. 6, 1954, Velma married the love of her life Duane D. Meyer. During their life together, they had three children. She loved spending time with her family more than anything. Velma’s words to her family included, “Remember me with smiles and laughter for that’s the way I’ll remember you all. If you remember me with only tears and sadness then don’t remember me at all.”
She is survived by her children, Douglas (Kathy) Meyer of Austin, Minnesota, Dawn (Charlie) Davis of Mound, Minnesota, and David Meyer; six grandchildren, Mitchell (Stephanie), Marshall, Nicole, Amanda, Drew, and Tracey Meyer; and five great-grandchildren.
Velma is preceded in death by her husband; and parents.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Behling officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Arrangements by Mayer Funeral Home. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com.
