Virginia Lois Johnson, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at Prairie Manor Nursing Home in Blooming Prairie.

She was born July 13, 1924, in Newry Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Albert and Nellie (Lea) Jolson. After graduating from Austin High School, she attended teachers college, which was located in the Austin High School building. She later earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Mankato State College at age 55. Virginia worked as a County 4-H extension service agent in Stillwater where she met Albert S. Johnson. They were married on Nov. 30, 1944, in St. Paul. Making their home in Hibbing, they worked together at ALGIN Photography Studio which they owned. They belonged to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Virginia also worked for a dentist as an assistant. They moved to Austin in 1961 where Virginia worked at Stevenson’s Dress Shop, managed a Gold Bond Stamp store and taught fourth grade at St. Augustine Catholic School. Virginia and Al spent a year in Germany during 1964 to 1965. Virginia and Al retired at the same time and went to Florida for three months, and then to the cabin for three months. The cabin was everything to them. They were active at Grace Lutheran Church. Virginia enjoyed antiques, as well as arts and crafts.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Richard) Stonehouse of Huntersville, North Carolina; son, Rodney (Deborah) Johnson of Elk River, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Eric (Chris) Stonehouse, Amanda (Scott) Omodth, and Emily (Brian) Oran Johnson; one great-grandchild, Samantha Stonehouse; sister, Verna (Nathan) Magnuson of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; parents, Albert and Nellie Jolson; and her two brothers, Alan and Lyle.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Red Oak Grove Cemetery, Austin, Minnesota, at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Grace Lutheran Church in Austin, Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.
