Best Bets: A monstrous weekend of fun

Get ready for some laughs this weekend. Filled with a play, some great music and a nice, fresh walks to raise awareness, this weekend has everything to get you out of your house and into the community.
1. Young Frankenstein
April 21-23, 28-30 at 7:30 p.m., May 1 at 2 p.m., Frank W. Bridges Theatre
Follow Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, as he inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of hunchbacked sidekick Igor and leggy lab assistant Inga, Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity abounds. The show, based on the 1974 movie by director Mel Brooks, is suggested for ages 13 and up and costs $16.
2. Austin Big Book Club Event
6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Riverland Community College
Attorney John Beckmann will speak about the legal aspects of “The Life We Bury” by Allen Eskens, which is the Page Turners selection for 2016. The event is free and open to the public.
3. Stepping Out for Autism Walk
9:30 a.m. Saturday, Hormel Historic Home
Stepping Out for Autism Walk will start at 9:30 a.m. the Hormel Historic Home. This annual event raises awareness of autism. Cost is $15 per adult and $10 per child under 18 and includes the walk, lunch and a Teddy Bear Band concert, along with raffles. For more information, call 507-433-4243.
4. VFW Life Concert — The Jimmies Blues Band
8-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Austin VFW Post 1216
Come hear some great music. There will be a free will offering at the door, and donations help fund VFW youth programs and veteran activities. The event is sponsored by KSMU MN State Radio and Reichel Foods. For more information, call 507-433-6039.
5. Forte Milers – 50 Years of Barbershop Harmony
3 p.m. Sunday, Historic Paramount Theatre
Forte Milers – 50 Years of Barbershop Harmony, will be an afternoon of barbershop harmony featuring the Forte Milers Barbershop Chorus, The Sopha Sisters Quartet from Cresco, Iowa, and special guests the St. Croix Crossing Quartet (2016 Barbership International Senior Quartet Silver Medalists).
