The Austin City Council approved a joint operation to sponsor an electronics recycling event next month.

The program has been in place since 2011 and has since recycled about 600,000 pounds of material, Public Works Director Steven Lang said.

Mower County and the city will work together with The Retrofit Companies to recycle electronics. Each will provide $500 for advertising. The signage will also be a joint project between the city and county. The city will provide a forklift for the event and there will be minimal overtime costs, Lang said.

The event is tentatively set for May 14 at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

The end result is residents will have the opportunity to get rid of electronics at minimal cost and less of the waste will end up being dumped in our parks and ditches, Lang said.
