A man wanted by U.S. Marshals in South Dakota for failing to register as a sex offender is in custody after a shooting incident where he attempted to flee and then crashed his vehicle into an apartment building in Hayfield Wednesday.
The suspect has a history of assault, weapons possession and recently made threats against law enforcement claiming he would not be arrested without a fight, according to Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose.
When he was located and confronted by officers, he attempted to flee, but then crashed his vehicle into an apartment, which sustained extensive damage. Officers fired shots and hit the vehicle, but not the suspect. The suspect then attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by officers on scene.
He was transported to the Steele County Jail and is being held on suspicion of felony assault charges related to the incident and a full-extradition warrant from South Dakota.
An Olmsted County deputy was treated and released at St. Marys Hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Two police vehicles and one civilian vehicle were damaged. Dodge County Emergency Management assisted with the building and housing for people displaced due to structural damage.
The suspect is expected to be charged in Dodge County District Court Friday.
