For a sixth-straight year, the Austin High School Youth Leadership Club will raise awareness and support for The Hormel Institute’s cutting-edge breast cancer research by coordinating its annual “Strides for a Cure” run/walk event this weekend.

Registration is ongoing for the 6th annual “Strides for a Cure” 5K run/walk and 5-mile race. The event is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at Austin’s Todd Park (Northwest entrance — race begins at soccer fields). Runners and walkers can also sign up at the event, starting at 8 a.m.

Since 2011, AHS Youth Leadership has raised $13,000 overall in support for breast cancer research at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota in Austin. As with any gift to The Hormel Institute, 100 percent of the donated funds directly support research focused on discoveries leading to cancer prevention and control.

Dr. Zigang Dong, Executive Director of The Hormel Institute, is inspired by the work of the Youth Leadership group. “Research is the only answer for making progress,” Dong said, “and this exceptional support from our young community members for our breast cancer research accelerates those efforts.”

This year’s event will begin with a kickoff ceremony at 8:40 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. start to the 5K run/walk and 5-mile races. Water will be available at the finish line. A prize drawing will follow the 5K run/walk and 5-mile races. Strollers are allowed for the walk portion but bicycles, inline skates and pets are prohibited.

Registration fees are $20 per student and $25 per adult for the 5K run/walk, and $30 per student and $35 per adult for the 5-mile race. Kids, ages 8 and under, are $10.

Registration forms are available on the “Strides for a Cure” website at stridesforacurerace.wordpress.com, and checks can be made payable to “AHS Youth Leadership.” Forms and checks can be sent to: Austin High School Activities Office, 301 Third St. NW, Austin.
