BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The Hayfield baseball team used three straight days of practice to sharpen their hitting and their bats exploded with their biggest offensive output of the season as they beat Blooming Prairie 16-2 in five innings on the road Friday.

Hayfield (7-6 overall) racked up 16 hits and it tallied seven runs in the top of the fourth to put the game completely out of reach. Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling didn’t like the way his team hit the ball in a 3-2 loss to Byron Monday so he made sure that wouldn’t happen again.

“On Monday we saw similar pitching early in the game and we couldn’t hit it,” Krekling said. “The last three practices was all hitting and their hands were probably sore. But it showed up today.”

Hayfield’s Adam Fjerstad was three-for-four with a double and three RBIs, Brady Dahl was four-for-four with a double and three RBIs and Aaron Younge was three-for-four with two RBIs.

“We’ve really worked on hitting hard line drives and getting our swings down,” Fjerstad said. “It helps to get some time to practice and I hope it pays off. We’re getting on a roll here and we’ve just got to keep putting the ball in play.”

Younge is hoping the Vikings will hit their stride at the right time, much like they did last year when they advanced to the Section 1A title game.

“Our bats really haven’t been alive much this season, but this game gives us a lot to of confidence,” Younge said. “The second half of the season was pretty good to us last year, and hopefully this year we can do the same thing.”

The lone highlight for BP (0-13 overall) came in the fifth when Connor Getchall blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence. BP was playing a lineup that included a lot of freshmen and two pitchers were making their first varsity appearances.

“We’re still bring guys up and it’s a big learning curve. It’ll get better,” BP head coach Matt Kittelson said. “We’ve just got to keep working and keep our heads up.”
