FFA students compete in state convention

Two Austin FFA teams attended the Minnesota State FFA Convention, competing in the Livestock Evaluation and Farm Business Management events.
Both teams competed at regional events during the school year and placed high enough to compete at state convention.
The 87th Minnesota State FFA Convention was held on April 24-26 at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. The convention hosted more than 3,600 FFA members from across Minnesota competing in numerous Career Development Events (CDE) and leadership activities.
Livestock Evaluation is a judging event where students need to evaluate beef, swine, sheep and goats for market and breeding characteristics. Austin’s team, consisting of Noah Carroll, Michael Carroll, Hannah Burkhart and Kristine Schechinger, placed second in a field of 61 teams. Out of 220 individual students competing, Hannah took sixth place, Michael took 16th, Noah took 25th, and Kristine took 106th.
Farm Business Management is an event where students need to evaluate and read current farm records and then make decisions based on economics, current market prices and family needs based on scenarios given. Austin’s team, consisting of Tim Farrell, Josh Irvin, Evan Meiergerd and Morgan Wills, placed sixth out of 31 teams. Out of 110 individual competitors, Josh took 15th, Tim took 16th, Morgan took 26th, and Evan took 97th.
