Authorities found a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) in a rural home while executing a search warrant at a property on Dodge/Mower Road on Sunday.
Mower County Sheriff’s Office investigators were executing a search warrant related to a suspected arson case in Waltham Sunday morning.
Around 2 p.m., they called in Dodge County deputies for assistance and stopped when they located what appeared to be a RPG in a compartment in the house, according to a press release from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.
They exited the house, set up a perimeter and contacted the St. Paul Bomb Squad and Air Force Ordinance Disposal Unit for assistance. The squad arrived at about 6:30 p.m. and X-rayed the RPG.
It was determined to be inert with no remaining explosives in it, but they were unable to determine if the fuse was good or not, the release said.
At about 9 p.m., the Air Force Unit detonated the round as a precautionary step to neutralize the ordinance due to being unsure of the status of the fuse.
The incident is being reviewed by the Dodge County Attorney’s Office for possible charges related to the search warrant.
The bomb squad also assisted with a search of a property in Waltham associated with the person of the residence. No other explosives were discovered.
