A small dog died after someone shot it with a high-powered pellet or BB gun over the holiday weekend.

Austin police responded to southwest Austin at 10:54 p.m. on Saturday to report of the dog’s death. The dog’s owners told police they let the dog outside for a little bit that night. The dog was not leashed. After it did not come back, they went and looked for it and found it in the backyard, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.

They were not sure where the incident happened and did not hear a shot.
