Hounds drop SpamTown Challenge opener

The Austin Greyhounds couldn’t get their bats going and a costly fifth inning set them back as they lost 9-0 to the Westmont, Ill. Red Sox in the SpamTown Challenge opener in Marcusen Park Thursday.
The Red Sox tallied six runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away. Austin committed five errors and it had just six players reach base in the loss.
“We’ve been rusty all year. We didn’t play our ‘A’ game today, but give them credit,” Hounds manager John Frein said. “Their pitcher threw very well. We had a handful of misuse in the field with some botched plays and things propagated from there.”
Grant Oldenburg allowed just one run in the first three innings for Austin and Jake Reinartz and Steven Clennon each pitched one inning without allowing an earned run.
“Grant threw really awesome and he didn’t throw a lot of pitches. He hasn’t thrown a lot and we’re still trying to get into it,” Frein said. “It’s still a great tourney and we’re going to play two good teams after this.”
The Hounds will play the Minneapolis Cobras 7 p.m. Friday and they will play the Austin Blue Sox 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
