MADELIA — Authorities have named a Michigan man who died after a trench collapsed on a Minnesota farm.
The Free Press reports that 28-year-old David James Erickson, of Ironwood, Michigan, was working in a trench box to place underground piping on a farm near the southern Minnesota town of Madelia on Monday afternoon when the trench caved in. The Blue Earth County sheriff’s office says the recovery effort took more than five hours due to the unstable soil.
A medical examiner determined the preliminary cause of death was asphyxia due to chest compression.
North Dakota-based Vortex Drain & Tile Co. was working to connect two separate drainage ditches via a 48-inch drain pipe.
