Dorothea Remley Calhoun, 83, formerly of Mower County, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2016, at the Ostrander Care and Rehab Center.
Dorothea P. Wilke was born July 17, 1932, in Burlington, Iowa, to Theodore and Laura (Sheets) Wilke. When she was 5 years old, her mother died of scarlet fever. Dorothea and her five siblings were put into orphanages and foster homes when their father was not able to care for them. She grew up between the Burlington, Bloomfield and Ottumwa areas in Iowa.
In 1949, she moved to Plainfield, Iowa, where she worked as a nanny and lived over the drug store. It was at this drugstore she met Harold Remley. They were married May 21, 1950. They lived in the Plainfield and Clarksville, Iowa, area until 1958, when they relocated; with their two daughters, to Stacyville, Iowa. In 1967, they moved to Taopi, Minnesota, and then to Ostrander, Minnesota, in 1971.
Harold and Dorothea later divorced and she moved to Grand Meadow, Minnesota. In 1977, she married Donald Calhoun and lived in Spring Valley where she was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Don, died in 1987.
Dorothea and her ex-husband, Harold, rekindled their friendship and became roommates. They traveled together to many places, including a trip to Alaska. She lived north of Dodge Center, Minnesota until Sept.r 17, 2014 when she entered the Ostrander Care and Rehab Center.
She is survived by her daughters; Roberta (Jim) Heckerson of Spring Valley and Rosemary (Ed) Hoefs of Hayfield, Minnesota, step-daughters; Debbie (Scott) Vreeman and Rhonda Schild of Rochester, Minnesota; three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren, and a sister; Delores Two-Bears of Geneseo, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don, special friend Hearold, a granddaughter, two step-great-grandsons, and four brothers; Jack, Robert, William and James.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday June 20, 2016, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow. Burial will follow in the Grand Meadow Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2016, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Monday.
