Elvina Lorraine Solomonson, 82, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Austin.
Elvina L. Cafourek was born Nov. 4, 1933, in Austin, the daughter of Robert and Ethel (Heimsness) Cafourek. A lifelong Austin resident and 1951 Austin High School graduate, Elvina played the saxophone in her high school band. She held various jobs over the years, including Weyerhaeuser for 14 years, Osco Drug, Haugland Real Estate, where she worked with her husband Sherman for many years, and manager of Lundberg’s clothing store.
She married Rollin Thoreson, and the couple later divorced. On Jan. 25, 1962, Elvina and Sherman J. Haugland were united in marriage. Sherman passed away Jan. 8, 1996. She married David Solomonson on May 17, 2008 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, where she was a member.
Elvina was the first crossing guard for Sumner Elementary School. She was involved in many organizations, including the Eagles Auxiliary, the Mower County Senior Center, the American Legion, the Red Hat Society, and SEMCAC as a volunteer. Elvina will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband David Solomonson of Austin, Minnesota; her children Pamela Strack and Penny (Steven) Arens, both of Austin, Gregory Haugland of Lyle, Minnesota, Steven (Connie) Thoreson of Downey, California, Susan (David) Hanson of Winona, Minnesota and Rochelle (Randy) Jech of Austin, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Bonnie Thoreson Harrington of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; siblings Betty (Norlan) Stahlheim of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Ron Cafourek of Osage, Iowa, Karen (Robert) Carlson of Rochester, Minnesota, Darrell (Rachelle) Cafourek of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Connie (Mitchell) Page of Littleton, Colorado; half-sister Rebecca Akkerman of Austin, Minnesota, half-brothers Mark Cafourek of Austin, Minnesota and Dan Cafourek of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sisters-in-law Rochelle Jensen and Patti Page, both of Austin, Elsie Haugland of Fort Dodge, Iowa; David’s children Mark Solomonson of Matthew, North Carolina, Steve (Rose) Solomonson of Shoreview, Minnesota, Pamela (Scott) Rew, Waseca, Minnesota, Sara Solomonson, Austin; 10 step-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
Elvina was preceded in death by her parents, her first two husbands Rollin Thoreson and Sherman Haugland, her son Scott David Thoreson, and her great-granddaughter Alexis Jo.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Lutter officiating. There will be a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 29, at Worlein Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
