Hounds blow past Angels, will play in Target Field July 23

It was a night of milestones for the Austin Greyhounds in Marcusen Park Friday.

Steve Clennon allowed just two hits as he pitched six innings for the first time in at least two years, Tyler Nelson hit his first ever wood bat home run in Minnesota, and the Hounds won their first game since June 11 when they blasted the Minneapolis Angels 16-0 in seven innings.

Nelson, a Hayfield grad and four-year standout for Bemidji State University, got things started when he launched a three-run homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning. Austin went up 4-0 in that frame and it took a 9-0 lead in the third when Jordan Hart doubled in three runs.

“Today was a good day. Everyone got involved and everyone contributed,” Nelson said. “Hopefully this was our slump buster and we can roll from here.”

Nelson has embraced the role of a leader on the Hounds (3-8 overall), who have a younger team this summer.

“I try to be someone they can look up to, because I remember being their age and being on the Blue Sox and just feeling like I didn’t belong there because I was from a smaller school because I was so much younger than them,” Nelson said. “I try to keep them loose.”

Clennon, an Austin grad, pitched five and two-thirds innings of hitless baseball before the Angels came up with a two-out single. He walked just one to get the win in six innings.

“I was aware of [the no hitter]. I wish I could’ve gotten it, but it is what it is,” Clennon said. “It felt really good. It was a bit of a small zone, but I was hitting my spots and Dylan [Gasner] was agreeing with me for the most part. Everyone behind me was playing well too. It was great teamwork.”

Eleven different Hounds players had a hit in the win and Clennon said that it felt great to end a long losing skid.

“This is the most fun I’ve had with these guys all year,” Clennon said. “Everyone was smiling and laughing and it’s a great group of guys.”

The Hounds will represent Austin as part of the Town Ball Classic at Target Field in Minneapolis 2:30 p.m. July 23. The event will generate $50,000 to aid youth baseball and softball.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 online through the Minnesota Twins web site or at any upcoming Hounds game in Marcusen Park. The Hounds are arranging a bus to the game with a cost of $25 per seat for the round trip.
