Wiesner gets save against his old team as Hounds beat Royals

Chad Wiesner is almost finished with his amateur baseball career, but he showed he still has something left in the tank as he pitched three shutout innings to help the Austin Greyhounds beat the Rochester Royals 6-4 in Marcusen Park Tuesday.

Wiesner, who is 44 years old, is in his last year of playing amateur baseball. He is in his second year with the Hounds (5-10 overall) and he played with the Royals for 13 years. Wiesner, who pitched in the Minor Leagues for six years, has been playing against Matt Cano of the Hounds since 1991 and he’s glad to team up with Cano, while giving some advice to Austin’s younger players this summer.

“It’s always fun pitching at my age. It’s still fun to go out there,” Wiesner said. “I don’t try to step on toes, because I’m not from Austin. I try to hand out pointers. It seems like some young guys react to plays instead of thinking ahead.”

The Hounds trailed 4-3 after the Royals hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning, but Austin scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth when Ethan Horstmann and Jake Thompson each had an RBI.

“We started late this year and we want to finish strong down the stretch,” Hounds manager John Frein said. “Rochester’s the best team in our section and we gave them their first loss tonight. We hope we can keep rolling and the goal is to get the number two seed in our section. We think that’s still within reach.”
