The Riverland Community College men’s soccer team is still looking to gain some experience and their youth showed up in a 5-1 loss to Gustavus JV in Wescott Athletic Complex Wednesday.

The Blue Devils (0-2 overall) allowed two goals in the first five minutes of the game on miscommunications and Gustavus scored on a corner kick with one second left in the first half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

“It wasn’t our best game. We’ve played better than this,” RCC head coach Edel Fernandez said. “We just weren’t connecting on the ball and there’s not much you can do about that.”

RCC’s lone goal came when Caio Garcia scored on a breakaway pass from Harrison Mora to pull the Blue Devils within 2-1 with 14:25 left in the first half. RCC also had a couple of scoring chances in the first half, but its offense went silent in the second frame.

The Blue Devils have a roster that is mostly made up of first-year players.

“We have just one sophomore and we’re trying to get everybody connected,” Fernandez said. “In practice they show me everything they have, but in the game it’s like there’s this disconnection. We’re working on it.”

RCC’s Adam Shehata stopped eight shots in the first half.
