David E. Kallman, 83, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at Sacred Heart Care Center, Austin.

He was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Chicago the son of Evert and Anna (Berquist) Kallman. David attended school in Chicago until age 16, when he moved to Minneapolis. Following graduation from Minneapolis South High School in 1950, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a degree in music education in 1954. On June 22, 1952, David and Donna Howe were united in marriage in Minneapolis. They had met at South High School where they both played in the band. A member of ROTC, David entered active duty in the U.S. Army in 1954. He trained in El Paso, Texas, and then served in Germany. Upon his 1956 honorable discharge, David began substitute teaching. In 1957, he accepted a teaching position in East Chain, Minnesota, teaching music and directing the band and choir. In 1961, David and Donna moved to Plainview, where he directed the band program. It was in 1965 that he accepted the position of band director for Austin Public Schools. He spent 28 years working primarily with beginning and junior high band students, retiring in 1993. David enjoyed spectator sports and he loved to golf and bowl. He played the trumpet and all wind instruments, including the harmonica, tuba, and flute. He was involved in the Austin Artist Series, serving as chairman for six years. The Kallmans belonged to Grace Baptist Church, where David directed the church choir for 30 years. He also taught Sunday school and was involved in AWANA. In 2008, David and Donna moved to the Village Co-op in Austin. He was a talented man, loved by many, and will be dearly missed.

David is survived by his wife Donna Kallman of Austin; his children Dorrine (Jeff) Schou, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Daniel (Christine) Kallman, Northfield, Minnesota, Douglas (Kim) Kallman, Frisco, Texas, Dale Kallman, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Deanna (Shawn) Welch, Lakeville, Minnesota, Dana (Kristine) Kallman, Chaska, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Katherine Schou, Brittany (Bjorn) Arneson, Laurel Kallman, Nicholas (Hannah) and Samuel (Isabelle) Kallman, Megan and Emma Welch, Andrew, Benjamin and Matthew Kallman; one great-grandchild Leif Arneson; sisters Violet Gerbert of Jacksonville, Florida, Annette (Paul) Miller of Janesville, Wisconsin, his brother Kenneth (Jeri) Kallman of Minnetonka, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Evert and Anna Kallman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at Grace Baptist Church in Austin with Reverend Devin Larsen officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, and will continue on Monday morning, for one hour prior to services at church. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Austin Public Schools Music Department or recipient of donor’s choice.
