Melvin (Dick) Leland Jones, 80, passed away peacefully on Aug. 30, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Northfield, Minnesota, on Oct. 11, 1935.
Melvin graduated from Elkton in 1953 and started farming in Pleasant Valley Township. He also had a lifelong career at IBM. He is survived by his wife Irene Jones (McCullough) and six kids: Richard (Wendy), Terry (Jan), Michelle (Craig Hanson), Lori (Jim Lewis), Jill (Al Slayton), Kurt (Kim), 14 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren, his sister Carol (Gary Lingbeck) and brother Jim (Ivadene). He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Olive Jones and siblings Bill, Betty, and Mary. Dick was known for his charm and sense of humor, which helped him put a smile on the face of everyone he met. He said his greatest and proudest accomplishment in life was his family, although his spacious garage was a close second. He is dearly loved and will be missed by many.
Dick’s funeral will be Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Grand Meadow Lutheran Church with the Rev. Beth Krolak officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church and Saturday one hour before the service. As Dick would say, “Glad you got to see me!”
