Letter: State should provide help on freedom to die with dignity

Gov. Mark Dayton,

Currently I am a person (citizen) in Minnesota who is living with stage four lung cancer and all of the usual symptoms that go with the disease. My primary reason for writing is to ask why we in Minnesota do not have laws on the books to provide for the freedom of dying and dignity like out sister states of California, Oregon, Washington, Vermont and Montana?

In my current position I have asked my primary physician to recommend one of the above states where I would have the freedom to pursue my desire to use laws that provide for dying with dignity. Can your office provide information and guidance regarding this topic so that I, as a resident of Minnesota, can pursue my desire to take advantage of the freedoms these laws provide to individuals so they and their families can avoid the experiences that they can anticipate are coming and that others who have passed away have experienced in the past.
