Program offered to help education on diabetes
Published 7:01 am Sunday, November 6, 2016
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes led by Jill Wagner, a certified lifestyle coach.
The program’s purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type two diabetes. Currently, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people. Another 79 million have prediabetes and are at high risk of developing diabetes, but only 11 percent are aware of it.
Research by the National Institutes of Health has shown that a program like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program reduces the number of new cases of diabetes by 58 percent overall and by 71 percent in individuals over age 60.
To learn more about the program, come to the informative session at the Mower County Senior Center at 2 p.m. on Nov.
Jill Wagner will be here to describe the program and answer any questions you might have. You do not need to be a member of the YMCA of Austin to participate.
Chili and baked potatoes
Join us for fun, food and fellowship for a potato bar Wednesday. This month we are having a chili and baked potato bar with all the fixings and dessert for $5. Stop by between 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and bring a friend.
We look forward to seeing you at our many programs at the senior center. Don’t forget our coffee shop where every day you can have homemade soup for $1 and sandwich for 50 cents. There will not be a hotdish this week due to the election. You are always welcome at the center. See you here.
