Backcourt spring Vikings to win over Chatfield

ROCHESTER — The Hayfield boys basketball team relied on the scoring and playmaking of its senior backcourt for much of the game against Chatfield, so it was fitting when those players made the two biggest plays of the night as the Vikings beat the Gophers 64-62 in the HVL-TRC Showdown in Mayo Civic Center Friday.

Trace Tebay, who scored 16 points, gave the Vikings the win when he drove and converted a three-point play with 15 seconds left and Drew Olive, who scored 20 points, set up Tebay’s score when he came up with a steal as Chatfield was attempting to run clock with a one-point lead.

Once Olive secured the steal with 54 seconds left in the game, the Vikings took their time in setting up a play for Tebay.

“We just stayed focused,” Tebay said. “We spend a lot of time in practice running or sets so we know what to do in situations like that. We trust what we know.”

The Gophers had one last chance to tie or take the lead, but the Vikings were able to force a turnover to with half of a second left to seal the win.

Olive also converted a three-point play to put Hayfield up 61-59 with 2:02 left, but Chatfield (1-4 overall) took a 62-61 lead when Parker Fossum hit a three-pointer with 1:45 left in the game.

Olive and Tebay had been putting up points from the three-point line for much of the night, but they were able to get aggressive down the stretch.

“When they’re playing us up tight, you can blow by them and get to the hoop,” Olive said.

Hayfield (5-3 overall) has now won five games in a row after dropping its first three games of the season to ranked opponents. Hayfield has controlled the ball and cut back on the turnovers, which has helped spur its winning streak.

Hayfield head coach Chris Pack credited Olive and Tebay for leading the way.

“It’s huge for this team to have those guards who can handle the ball. They can shoot and they can defend the perimeter. They do so much for us,” he said. “This was a huge game. Chatfield is in our section and come seeding time, we’re going to be compared to them. It’s good to get a win like that. To go through those ups and downs and for us to execute like we did down the stretch is big for this team.”
