Decking the Halls: Woodson students show off decorating skills

Woodson Kindergarten Center put its own twist on the old carol when they worked to “deck the doors” of the school in holiday cheer.
Each classroom decorated their door with a holiday scene or theme. Then, on Tuesday, parents and students voted on their favorite door by way of making a donation to Salvation Army.
The winner of the most funds raised and the door voted best by the students each earned a pizza party. And, Superintendent Dave Krenz also had a vote, and his top door pick also earned a pizza party for the winning classroom.
There was more. Principal Jessica Cabeen had a Salvation Army kettle at which she rang the bells, raising even more for the charity.
The doors did not disappoint. There were doors decked in elves and reindeer and lighted Christmas trees; there were kids bearing mustaches (as in “Mustaching Through the Snow,” complete with picture of each student, mustachioed, with a Santa hat). Add to that Pete the Cat (a favorite book character) and, gum drops, and every other holiday theme you could think of.
“Some years the teachers change themes; other teachers have a favorite theme and keep it,” said teacher Kristen Becker, whose gingerbread house theme was a hit. She admitted that some of the teachers got a bit competitive, “but in a fun way.”
Parent Gema Soto said she appreciated the enthusiasm and fun Woodson generated in the students.
“There hasn’t been a day during the holiday season when (her son) Zarek did not come home excited about something they were doing,” she said.
Zarek nodded, adding the door decorating was fun.
“I cut and I glued,” he confided.
