Packers pile on the points in victory over Winona

The Austin boys basketball team showed how explosive its lineup can be when it put up its biggest scoring effort in at least 20 years when it beat Winona 101-64 in Packer Gym Thursday.
Thirteen different players scored in the win for the Packers (4-0 overall, 3-0 Big Nine) and five of those players reached double figures. Both Gach compiled 22 points, four rebounds and four assists and Duoth Gach had 20 points just two days after he set an AHS record with nine three-pointers in one game.
Duoth hit three three-pointers during a 31-2 run that saw the Packers break the game open after they trailed 12-9 early on.
“It’s fun when you get a lot of people scoring, but we’ve got to pick it up on the rebounding,” Duoth said.
Austin received a huge boost from the bench in the win as its backups combined for 38 points. Jany Gash had 13 points, Tyler Tupy had three points, four steals and five assists and Moses Issa had 11 points.
Austin head coach Kris Fadness was pleased with how the bench stepped up its play after the Winhawks (0-4 overall, 0-4 Big Nine) had rallied to pull within 53-43 early in the second half.
“I felt we had a couple of lapses. I was not happy with the last four minutes of the first half and then in the second half the first four minutes was the same thing,” Fadness said. “I thought ‘here we go again, this is our M.O. and this is what we’ve been doing.’ It was nice to go to the bench and see Pat Hagan be physical around the basket, see Jany Gash give us a huge lift and Moses has just been solid for us. Tyler Tupy played his best game on the defensive end.”
The Packers were able to force 30 Winona turnovers, while committing just eight of their own turnovers. That gave Austin plenty of chances to get out and run on its way to its most lopsided win of the season.
“We had a lot of motivation because we know we’re better defensively than we have been playing,” said Tate Hebrink, who had 10 points. “We’ve got to step it up on defense. Our defense leads to a lot of our offense. When we get stops we can push the ball up.”
The Packers will face a major test when they play at Caledonia, which is ranked No. 1 in Class AA, 5 p.m. Wednesday.
“Caledonia is going to be one of the best teams we play this year,” Fadness said. “They’re very athletic and they’re very good defensively. They’re going to test our toughness more than anything else and it’s going to be very tough to go down there. Those kids don’t know what losing is. They just don’t lose in anything. This will be a good challenge.”
