Girls basketball: Vikings make hay from the outside

The Hayfield girls basketball team put up their best shooting performance of the season as they knocked down 17 three-pointers in a 75-64 win over Byron (7-8 overall, 4-4 HVL) in Byron Friday.

Byron’s Ayoka Lee, who had 26 points and 16 rebounds, dominated the paint, but Hayfield (14-3 overall, 9-1 HVL) made its living from behind the arc. Carrie Rutledge had a career-high 27 points as she hit five three-pointers and Olivia Matti had 20 points as she hit six three-pointers.

“They run a zone and we weren’t going to score down low on them,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We ran some nice sets and got some looks. We did a nice job of hitting those open looks. Three pointers can be feast or famine, tonight we feasted.”
