New class coming to the senior center

The Mower County Senior Center is hosting a new six-week session.
To learn more there will be an open house at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, known as “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” in Minnesota, is a group workshop designed to enable participants to build confidence in managing their chronic conditions and maintaining their health.
Participants are adults with chronic health conditions, family members or caregivers. Workshop size is eight to 15 participants. Workshop sessions take place once per week for six weeks. Each session is two, two and a half hours in length. Classes are facilitated by a pair of trained leaders from Catholic Charities. Classes will be held at the Mower County Senior Center.
Classes start Wednesdays, Feb. 1.
Historical society
At 2 p.m. on Thursday, Mower County Historical Society Executive Director John Haymond will be with us. He will be talking about Henry Hastings Sibley who occupied the stage of Minnesota history for 56 active years.
Sibley was the territory’s first representative in Congress (1849-1853) and the state’s first governor (1858-1860). In 1862 he led a volunteer army against the Dakota under Taoyateduta (Little Crow IV). After his victory at Wood Lake and his rescue of more than 200 white prisoners, he was made a brigadier general in the Union Army.
Defensive driving class
The next Defensive Driving Class is noon to 4 p.m. on Friday. This is a refresher course needed for a 10 percent discount on your insurance. Cost for members is $16 and for non-members $19. Classes coming up are: Noon to 4 p.m. March 10; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 5 and 9 to 1 p.m. June 30.
You may not be old now, but if you’re lucky, one day you will be. We look forward to seeing you at our many programs at the senior center.
