New year and new beginnings

It’s a new year and a chance for new beginnings for all. That is pretty much the essence of rescue.
Animals enter the shelter for many reasons. They are made healthy and whole and receive a fresh start. We are hoping that 2017 will continue to be as successful as 2016.
In 2016, 144 dogs were adopted into new homes by the MCHS. Many do not realize the amount of work that goes into one dog adoption. Because of this, dogs are not adopted on a “first come, first serve,” same-day basis. It usually takes a few days to process a dog application. Sometimes this is frustrating for an excited potential adopter. However, it is the only way to make certain that the dog is a good match and will have the best chance at a forever home.
The MCHS took in 130 new dogs in 2016. Surprisingly, 61 of these dogs were owner surrenders. In previous years, the majority of the dogs were rescued from the Austin City Pound. Only 38 dogs came from the pound in 2016. The shift in numbers seems to coincide with the relocation of the pound next door to the MCHS. It appears that more people are opting to surrender their dogs as opposed to turning them into the pound as strays.
Cat overpopulation still continues to plague the MCHS. In 2016, 154 cats were adopted. Unfortunately, 172 new cats entered the shelter. Over 100 cats came to the shelter from the city pound. As January progresses, cat adoptions are going very well. However the shelter is still housing over 140 cats and kittens.
As always, shelter volunteers will continue to preach about the importance of spaying and neutering. It is our sincere hope that by doing this, we might be able to stop at least some of the many backyard breeders in the area. Persuading even one to stop is a step in the right direction.
Because of our commitment to this, we continue to host the MN Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP) every other month at the shelter. In 2016, these visits spayed and neutered 131 cats, 63 dogs, and one rabbit. The group’s next visits are scheduled for March 3 and May 12. Information can be found at mnsnap.org.
Pasta dinner
It’s that time of year again. The annual Pasta Dinner and Silent/Live Auction will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the Holiday Inn in Austin from 4 to 7 p.m. Live music will be provided by “Rush Hour”. Donations are now being accepted at the shelter. Please join us for good food and a ton of fun to support a very important cause.
We would not be able to succeed without the generous support we receive from the community. We are truly thankful for donations in memory of Gene Roden, Marion Ward Tangren, Nini Johnson, “Sadie” Verzani (by Pawsh Styling), “Norton, my sweet boy,” “Taz and Jinx,” Arlene Anderly, and Don Witcomb. We are also thankful for donations in honor of Gretchen Ramlo and “Sophie, my dog niece.”
