HAYFIELD —Sophomore Mason Tapp got the Vikings started and senior Trace Tebay finished the job as the Hayfield boys basketball team beat Blooming Prairie 61-45 in Hayfield Tuesday.
Tapp, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds, hit five of his six three-pointers in the first half and Tebay, who had 20 points, four assists and three steals, had 16 points in the second half.
“We just came out on defense and played bigger and stronger [in the second half],” Tebay said. “In the first half they kind of had us frustrated a little bit. In the second half we came out and did what we needed to do to win.”
Tebay and Drew Olive, who had nine points and four assists did a lot of dribble penetration to get Tapp going in the first half. Tapp has emerged into a top outside shooting threat for the Vikings (10-9 overall) this season.
“Sometimes I’ll feel it and when I get open shots I’m comfortable shooting it,” Tapp said. “The guards do a good job of driving and setting me up.”
BP (9-8 overall) tied the game at 14-14 early on but Tapp drilled three three-pointers in a 15-2 Hayfield run to push Hayfield’s lead to 29-16. The Vikings opened the second half on a 14-3 run that was started by a Tebay three-pointer and capped by a Tebay three-point play that made it 44-22 with 12:07 left in the game.
“When we see a zone we know if we’re patient we’re going to get some good looks from the outside,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “For a little bit we were taking some quick shots. That’s what they want us to do. I tell them I don’t care if we took a minute or two passes, as long as we get a good look. When Mason is open, he’s a pretty dangerous shooter.”
BP had a pair of freshmen step up in the loss as Kaden Thomas had 13 points and four rebounds and Gabe Hagen had 10 points and five rebounds.
BP head coach Nate Piller said he liked what his team did on defense and he credited Hayfield for making tough shots.
“You just can’t give them any space at all,” Piller said. “They make shots if they’re a little bit open. We’re right there and we’re closing out and they’re still hitting shots. Then you have to try and get points to try and keep up and they’re defense did a nice job of swarming.”
