Gov. Mark Dayton is weighing two treatment options — surgery or radiation — for the prostate cancer he disclosed last month, his office said Thursday.

Dayton, 70, had appointments this week at Rochester’s Mayo Clinic related to the cancer. His deputy chief of staff Linden Zakula said the governor will decide soon which treatment route to take for the cancer.

“Governor Mark Dayton’s prostate cancer was caught early and is localized, treatable and curable,” said Karl Oestreich, Mayo Clinic spokesman. Zakula said the clinic’s tests confirmed the cancer has not spread.

As have the governors of Alaska and Massachusetts, Dayton is expected to continue work despite the cancer treatment. He made his diagnosis public this past month after he collapsed during his State of the State address. The collapse was unrelated officials have said.

“The governor should be able to carry on his duties serving the citizens of Minnesota without significant interruption,” Oestreich said.
